What are you going to do if you have the piano of Tori Amos, the feminine side of Sufjan Stevens and you don’t have to be on Oprah to gain credits (Yes, Corinne Bailey Rae is the case here)? I guess you better quit that daily job and become a musician. Add the violin’s tuneful flutter to the recipe above. Before these words were even spoken Joy Ike somehow had her doubts on her debut back in December 2006. Although that piano-violin-nude-vocal-driven amalgamation could buy her respect, she had to prove her potentials to some extent louder, perhaps. The cutie has returned in full circle on her sophomore effort with a name as simple and pure as Good Morning. Her Skye-Edwards-ish face is nothing but good news: innovative, adventurous and less radical. She’s not trying to climb to the extremes, but if you just try “City Lights” it is really more than a plain pop song. In fact there’s color galore. And buy full circle, I mean there’s actually too much to listen to. You can see her as a more R&B version of Brooke Waggoner but at the same time the violin seems to a key factor here. Even at the ending part of “City Lights” where she practices her higher octaves a little, you’re hearing a more settled down Bjork. Under any circumstance, whether you’re hypnotized by what Oprah is recommending or you’re digging the deep net for talents, Joy Ike is never a hard choice to pick. And isn’t Good Morning the most refreshing and lively greeting ever?
